CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, March 24, Hillsboro police took a man into custody after he allegedly threatened a restaurant employee during a 7-hour standoff at a Washington County hotel.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • A 47-year-old former restaurant employee in Tanasbourne was arrested after a seven-hour standoff with police that began on March 22 when he threatened a coworker with a sharp object and continued on March 24 when he barricaded himself in a Rodeway Inn room near Highways 26 and 217—he now faces charges of unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, disorderly conduct and harassment.  KATU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Becky Borlan ended community events at Shute Park Library last Friday where she reviewed an art submission with local residents as part of Hillsboro’s new public art project. Her plan is to build a 24-foot-high dome made from colorful laser-cut panels that will be assembled from parts shipped from Maryland and installed by mid-fall—drawing inspiration from favorite local plants shared at the events.  Hillsboro Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 25, the Oregon House passed Alyssa’s Law (HB 3083) that requires schools to consider installing panic alarm systems to connect staff directly with emergency services in critical situations. School districts can access funding (up to $2,000 per school) through the Oregon Department of Education’s School Safety and Emergency Management program as the measure now moves to the Senate.  KATU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pet owners are warned that some flowers—such as lilies, tulips, and daffodils—can be dangerous to pets because lilies may cause kidney failure in cats. DoveLewis advises checking pet-safe plant lists and staying alert to other spring hazards like garden chemicals, high temperatures and fall risks from open windows.  KATU
  • Data from the Oregon Health Authority show Oregon hospitals reported a modest decline in health care-associated infections in 2023 with significant drops in catheter-associated urinary tract infections and C. difficile infections in acute care hospitals. However, four critical access hospitals saw more central line bloodstream infections and a moderate rise in MRSA bloodstream infections—975 infections were recorded overall in 2023.  KATU
