Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.
Good morning, Hillsboro.
A study from GOBankingRates finds that Oregon residents must earn at least $148,309 to take home $100,000 after taxes—this is the highest tax burden in the nation at 32.6%.
The Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire voted to advance a bill repealing Oregon’s wildfire hazard map—an effort that many say could lower home values and affect insurance rates.
The legislation now heads to the Senate floor for a full vote.
In late March, the Department of Homeland Security canceled the $300,000 federal grant given every two years to Ecumenical Ministries Oregon, which helps immigrants and refugees in Hillsboro and other communities.
The group said it will keep running its workshops and seek pro bono lawyers and donations—using its savings until September.
Oregon lawmakers heard testimony on Monday about Senate Bill 1187 — a plan that would require large fossil fuel companies to pay into the Oregon Climate Superfund to cover damages from climate change.
A second hearing is scheduled today to further discuss how to assess both past and future climate-related costs.
