Good morning, Hillsboro. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 22nd of April.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • US Sen. Ron Wyden said he will fight a House budget that may cut federal funding for Meals on Wheels, risking a reduction of 400,000 to 500,000 meals in the tri-county area & threatening the nutrition of local seniors. The nonprofit relies on federal funds & supplemental support to deliver meals to homebound adults.  KOIN
  • On Monday, the Oregon House passed a bill that ends recreational and commercial trapping of beavers near impaired waterways—letting the animals dam streams to help keep water in place. Lawmakers hope the change will boost natural cleaning on more than 100,000 miles of water and support a healthier ecosystem.  KOIN
  • A federal trial is underway in Oregon City as the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde challenge PGE’s plan to condemn 5 acres near Willamette Falls—arguing that the claimed safety concerns are unproven and risk ending traditional fishing practices. Tribal members and local officials held rallies and stressed that the move will limit public access—citing over 100 years of safe operations at the site.  KOIN
  • On Thursday, the Oregon House passed House Bill 3819 that lets the State Board of Massage Therapists post violation placards, impose higher fines, and add licensed therapists to mandatory reporters to combat human trafficking in illicit massage businesses. The bill requires tougher penalties such as a Class C felony for repeat offenders—while some lawmakers worry it may unintentionally lead to discrimination against small Chinese-owned operations.  KOIN
