- ➤ Robert Elmer Atrops was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for the 1988 murder of his estranged wife Deborah Lee Atrops after DNA evidence linked mud from her car trunk to his home—he now faces possible parole in 25 years. Hillsboro News-Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ North Plains has been selected for a $1 million EPA grant to clean contaminated topsoil from a 5-acre site that is planned to host the city’s only grocery store—City Manager Bill Reid said the grant will remove up to 12 inches of soil while further demolition work is expected if funding is confirmed. The city will seek additional funds to cover cleanup gaps and prepare the site for future development. Hillsboro News-Times
- ➤ Oregon leaders and food advocates warned on July 9 that federal cuts in a GOP megabill will cause rising hunger, long processing times, and extra costs estimated at $425 million a year. Gov Kotek has ordered state agencies to review changes that could lead to layoffs and reduced services for over 700,000 SNAP recipients—impacting low-income families. Hillsboro News-Times
