BUSINESS NEWS

  • Intel said it will lay off 2,392 workers from four facilities on Tuesday, July 15, including three in Hillsboro and one in Aloha. The layoffs, which affect workers not in a union, are part of a new CEO’s plan to make the company leaner—cutting extra steps so engineers can work better.  KOIN
  • Intel will lay off 2,392 workers from its Hillsboro sites effective July 15 – nearly 2,000 more than the 523 laid off last week. The company, which employs close to 20,000 workers in Oregon, will rearrange positions as it restructures its workforce.  KXL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hillsboro’s Westside Electric Living Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at Tyson Recreation Center—1880 N.E. Griffin Oaks St.—and it will show hands-on clean energy tools, vendor booths, and workshops on energy efficiency. Visitors will see a mobile Solar Trailer from Oregon State University that demonstrates solar power and learn about switching from gas to low-emission electric tools.  Hillsboro News-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city began permanent repairs on a water line near R.A. Brown Middle School at the corner of Southeast Cornelius Pass and Southeast Frances after a leak in March caused a sinkhole — work will run from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the summer — to finish before school resumes in September.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • Hillsboro announced that Southwest Adams Avenue will be fully closed between Baseline and Walnut streets from July 30 to Aug. 7 for rail replacement work, which will also close the Southwest Oak Street intersection from Southwest Dennis to Southwest Adams. Drivers will follow detour routes—another closure is planned at the First Avenue railroad crossing from Aug. 11 to 15, while local businesses remain accessible.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • Work is ongoing on a $420 million water treatment plant in Sherwood + the facility will treat Willamette River water and send it through a 30-mile pipeline to supply drinking water for Hillsboro, Tualatin Valley Water District and Beaverton when it opens in 2026. The modern plant is built on bedrock to endure major earthquakes + it will feature an on-site kolk pond for public viewing as it nears completion.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • K9 Radar retired from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office after 10 years of service, having joined in February 2015 and helped capture 119 suspects while winning hearts with his gentle nature. The dog was celebrated Friday at the department’s Hillsboro training center + will now spend time at home with his other pets + may make a road trip to visit fans in a few cities.  KOIN
