GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kotek is calling a special legislative session on August 29 to vote on a new transportation bill that will raise fees, including a gas tax increase of six cents per gallon, to help delay further layoffs at the Oregon Department of Transportation. Lawmakers must approve the bill for the changes to take effect in January 2025, and over 480 workers have already been laid off this session—marking the largest government layoff in state history. - ➤ Jerry Willey, who has served on the Washington County Board of Commissioners since 2018 and was Hillsboro’s mayor, said he will not seek a third term when his term ends next year. His District 4 seat, which covers Hillsboro and nearby communities, will have a new commissioner sworn in in January 2027. Hillsboro News-Times
- ➤ The Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries warned employers that calling ICE on employees who report unsafe working conditions is illegal under state law. The agency said it will use every enforcement tool+hold violators accountable and will protect workers+ensure fair treatment as it reviews complaints. Hillsboro News-Times
- ➤ Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek unveiled her transportation funding plan Tuesday morning in a virtual media availability that calls for a six-cent gas tax increase, higher vehicle registration and title fees, an extra fee on electric vehicles and a 0.1% payroll tax increase to keep transit services running. The governor also delayed 483 ODOT layoffs until Sept. 14 and set a special session to consider the bill starting Aug. 29—TriMet later announced service cuts set to begin in November if funding falls short.
