CRIME NEWS

  • A Washington County deputy lost the use of his left eye when he was shot seven times while serving an eviction notice at The Timbers at Tualatin Apartments—he filed a lawsuit on July 25 for $23 million against the owners, management and investors claiming they were negligent.  Hillsboro News-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Next Level Pinball Museum in Hillsboro was named the best arcade in the United States by Newsweek’s 2025 Reader’s Choice Awards on August 5 + the retro gaming venue now gains national recognition after beating major competitors. The 27,000-square-foot museum, which opened in 2017 and hosts over 650 free-play machines along with themed tournaments and family-friendly events, has already been celebrated as a top destination for arcade fans.  Hillsboro News-Times

FINANCE NEWS

  • Portland General Electric asked for a 2.2% rate increase so that bills for a typical home using 784 kilowatt hours could rise up to 2.8%—or roughly $4.49 per month—if approved, with changes set for April 1, 2026. The filing follows a 5.5% rate hike in January and comes after recent job cuts meant to help fund grid improvements—officials expect the commission and Citizen’s Utility Board to review the proposal.  KOIN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 30, the National Association of Wholesaler-Distributors filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Portland arguing that Oregon’s new Plastic Pollution and Recycling Modernization Act is unconstitutional because it gives fee-setting power to a private nonprofit (Circular Action Alliance) rather than the state’s environmental quality department. State Sen. Janeen Sollman of Hillsboro said the law is designed to shift disposal costs from residential customers and small businesses to producers who create more packaging waste.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • State lawmakers are awaiting a 2026 report to review how well state-employed and contracted defense lawyers work as Gov. Kotek and the Public Defense Commission agreed to expand the trial defense team—she recently approved a 14.8% budget increase aimed at reducing unrepresented defendants. This move follows Senate Bill 337 requirements to boost the number of state-employed attorneys.  Hillsboro News-Times
