COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center will close for annual maintenance from Aug. 25 through Sept. 14, with the lobby open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays except on Labor Day — members are advised to use the Hidden Creek Community Center while the facility undergoes repairs and updates.  Hillsboro News-Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington County’s only jail — reduced to 388 beds by construction — has released over 2,100 inmates this year as police issued criminal citations when full, according to District Attorney Kevin Barton. A consulting study shows nearly 1,000 beds will be needed by 2055 and local officials will propose a bond measure for a new jail by 2027.  KATU
  • KATU reported that Oregon lawmakers are pressed to address SNAP overpayments after a new federal bill will cut nearly $3 billion from funding, which will shift costs to the state and reduce food support for many families. Lawmakers have offered differing views—one representative said the cuts were unforeseen while another blamed state administrative errors.  KATU
