ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 12-unit apartment complex caught fire Sunday, Aug. 24—firefighters quickly controlled the two-alarm blaze on the 2000 block of Northeast Barberry Drive with no injuries reported.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • At about 2:10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, a brush fire burned roughly 1.5 acres near a home in the 49000 block of Northwest Strohmayer Road in rural Washington County—firefighters evacuated residents and built containment lines amid steep terrain and low visibility, with no injuries reported.  Hillsboro News-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Parrot Creek Child and Family Services and Bark hosted an Indigenous camping trip at Mt. Hood National Forest from Aug. 8 to 10 to offer a weekend of cultural workshops and outdoor activities for Native communities. The groups provided gear, meals, and guidance to help urban Natives reconnect with their traditions—an effort designed to make nature accessible amid challenges in public land access.  Hillsboro News-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The record-setting heat eased on Sunday but an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until Tuesday night. Hillsboro hit a new record of 101 degrees—NWS advised everyone to dress lightly and take breaks when outside.  KATU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 21st, the Oregon National Guard broke ground on the Hillsboro Readiness Center in Hillsboro — a $30 million, 45,000-square-foot project located a mile from the old 1954 armory — which will boost the Guard’s presence for the next 50 years and include a 20,000-square-foot storage area for M777 howitzers.  KXL
  • Governor Kotek signed four energy bills on Monday in Hillsboro—one holds big companies responsible for their bills, another limits rate hikes, a third doubles funding for energy help, and the fourth rewards utilities for public service. The changes will help more families get reliable and affordable power.  KOIN
  • Washington County replaced Metro West with American Medical Response two years ago to modernize emergency services amid concerns about response times. AMR struggled to meet its targets early on—especially in suburban areas—but has since improved its compliance in rural and urban zones.  Hillsboro News-Times
