Good morning, Hillsboro. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 11th of September.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Between April and July, Oregon recorded its fourth-driest period and nearly 80% of the Northwest is in drought — more than half with severe or extreme conditions as measured by the U.S. Drought Monitor. State climatologist Larry O’Neill said reduced spring rain has raised wildfire risks and led to drought emergencies in several counties, while forecasts for winter remain mixed.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • Officials detected the emerald ash borer Tuesday morning in Portland, putting nearly 100,000 trees at risk as the invasive beetle spread to Washington, Yamhill, Marion and Clackamas counties—Portland Parks and Recreation released a plan that uses insecticides and tree removal to curb the infestation. The city will work with state and regional partners to monitor the spread and safeguard the urban forest.  KOIN
  • Emerald ash borer was detected in traps in six new Washington County sites including Hazeldale Park—about a mile west of Beaverton—and Killin Wetlands Nature Park near Banks, the Oregon Department of Forestry said. Hillsboro will treat about 500 public ash trees along its western and southern boundaries to help slow the pest’s spread.  Hillsboro News-Times
