ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A weekend fire at a Washington County apartment complex displaced 10 residents when flames started in a third-floor unit on the 14600 block of Northwest Cornell Road on Sunday, Oct. 5, and fire crews confirmed that everyone left safely while one person was treated for minor injuries — a fire investigator is now probing the cause. - ➤ Cappella Romana returned from touring Europe and will perform in Seattle on Oct 24 before playing in Portland on Oct 26—bringing their world-class talent home. KOIN
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Oct. 6, the Oregon School Activities Association voted to sanction boys volleyball—making it an official sport with its first season set for spring 2026 after a two-year trial. Local teams from Hillsboro and surrounding areas took part in the emerging activity phase that saw a 51% national growth over six years. Hillsboro News-Times
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Supreme Court declined to take Project Veritas's challenge to Oregon's law that bans secret audio recordings—leaving it in effect. A January 9th ruling by the 9th Circuit had already upheld the law, which requires all parties to be notified before recording, and the decision means the regulation stays in place. - ➤ A federal judge broadened her restraining order to bar the federal government from moving National Guard troops from other states to Oregon—after forces from California and Texas were deployed to Portland amid protests at an ICE facility. The 14-day order was issued after a telephonic hearing on Sunday and will remain until an appeal is heard. Hillsboro News-Times
- ➤ Local governments, park districts, tribal governments and other public land managers can apply for up to $1.6 million in federal grants for trail projects—applicants must submit a letter of intent by Oct. 15 and secure a 20% match by Nov. 15. The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department will use the funds to build new trails and upgrade existing ones. Hillsboro News-Times
