- ➤ Two Oregon authors Omar El Akkad and Karen Russell are finalists for the National Book Awards, with El Akkad’s nonfiction work competing and Russell’s fiction in the running; Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner will host the finalist reading. The reading will be held on Nov. 18 at New York University’s Skirball Center and the awards ceremony will take place on Nov. 19 in New York. KOIN

- ➤ WM Northwest advises residents to have a zero-waste Halloween by reusing old costumes, swapping decorations, and repurposing pumpkins to cut down on trash—tips aim to reduce plastic waste.
