Good morning, Hillsboro. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 18th of October.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Oct. 15, Hillsboro School District sent a message to ease fears about alleged ICE activity by training staff to protect student records and keep ICE agents separate from campus areas—no ICE personnel have entered any school—while local police work with administrators to offer resources to concerned families.  Hillsboro News-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Forestry declared fire season over — lifting fire restrictions across all its districts. The agency said the decision follows a season of fewer large fires thanks to a strong early response by firefighters.  KATU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Human Services mailed SNAP notices this week to over 313,000 Oregonians—informing them that benefit changes from the Big Beautiful Bill will cut support for some groups. The new work rules will be used to evaluate recipients, and changes will take effect in November.  KOIN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Thousands of Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers in Oregon and Southwest Washington picketed on Friday as part of a five-day strike that began Tuesday and will end Sunday morning—with demands for safer staffing levels and fair wages amid stalled contract talks; Kaiser said their hospitals, medical offices, and pharmacies will remain open as negotiations are set to resume after the strike ends.  KOIN
  • Rural Oregonians have fewer Medicare plans to choose from as plans from Moda Health and Summit Health end soon — while urban residents can choose from many options offered by Aetna, PacificSource and Regence. These changes widen the gap in health coverage and may prompt state regulators to expand options.  Hillsboro News-Times

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Helvetia Tavern in Hillsboro was named one of Oregon's best hole-in-the-wall burger spots by Chowhound on Wednesday. The classic eatery (opened in 1946) is known for its 'goop' sauce and a ceiling lined with trucker hats that honor its long tradition.  KOIN
