ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colleen Dunn rescued a small salmon shark that was struggling on a beach off Manzanita while walking her dogs in October. She grabbed the shark by its tail and rushed it to deeper water—her quick action helped the shark breathe normally again.  KATU
  • A summer trapping effort found the invasive Mediterranean oak borer is now widespread in the northern Willamette Valley, with over 500 beetles captured from six counties that threaten Oregon white oak trees. State and federal researchers will boost public awareness and community detection to help slow potential oak decline—residents are urged to report signs of damage.  KXL

FINANCE NEWS

  • The Oregon Department of Revenue confirmed a $1.41B surplus from the 2023-2025 biennium that will give taxpayers who filed a 2024 return a tax kicker when they file their 2025 taxes—calculated as 9.863% of their 2024 tax liability.  KOIN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Plains is holding its annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Veterans Memorial Park, where local veterans will speak plus a Presentation of Colors and Rifle Salute will take place by Hillsboro’s Martin J. Ryan VFW Post 2666. Catherine Loyer will perform the national anthem while a moment of silence and light refreshments provided by the VFW Post 2666 Auxiliary and North Plains McDonald’s add to the ceremony.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • SNAP benefits were deposited on EBT cards on November 7 after a period of uncertainty caused by the government shutdown—recipients are told to check their card balances before shopping.  KOIN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dallas Ransom, a U.S. Space Force officer who collapsed during a gym workout in 2022 after a brain rupture, fought back with a nearly 10-hour emergency surgery and steady recovery—he bought a home in South Hillsboro, got a robotic arm to help him move, and will go to Palo Alto in November for more inpatient therapy to aid his recovery and support other veterans.  Hillsboro News-Times

  • Pacific Conference Football 2025 honored top high school athletes from Glencoe and Sherwood—Daniel Heninger was named Offensive Player of the Year and Jack Wilson earned Defensive Player of the Year—with other awards recognizing linemen and coaches from these schools while additional honors went to players from Newberg, Liberty and McMinnville. This recognition highlights the conference’s strong talent pool across both offense and defense.  Hillsboro News-Times
