BUSINESS NEWS

  • Intel laid off 669 workers from four Oregon plants after a WARN notice said layoffs began on September 16. Three of the sites are in Hillsboro (2501 NE Century Blvd, 5200 NE Elam Young Pkwy and 2111 NE 25th Ave) while the fourth is in Aloha, and this followed a July layoff of 529 workers.  KOIN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bag&Baggage Productions in Hillsboro is presenting 'A Tuna Christmas' with a preview performance on Dec. 4 and weekend shows through Dec. 21 at The Vault Theater & Event Space. The two-person comedy — directed by Mandana Khoshnevisan and starring Trevor Harter and Samuel Scott Campbell in over 20 roles — uses satire of small-town life to offer a humorous look at community and politics.  Hillsboro News-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cascades Pika Watch Scientific Adviser Johanna Varner said that pikas in the Columbia River Gorge are nearly at their pre-fire numbers following the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire—volunteers recorded sightings at 82% of surveyed sites while the program boosted participation by 62 percent. Volunteers will be invited to join the 2026 Pika Watch this summer.  KOIN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Senator Deb Patterson announced that local utility companies are working with lawmakers to help customers affected by the shutdown that ended Wednesday. Northwest Natural, Pacific Power and Portland General Electric will halt shutoffs for income-qualified and medically vulnerable customers while Cascade Natural Gas, Avista Corp and Idaho Power offered 30-day pauses on collections—steps designed to ease the financial burden until year’s end.  KOIN

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Oregon Health Authority said if Congress does not renew premium tax credits by year-end, about 110,000 people in Oregon will lose some help paying for health care—35,000 may lose all assistance and 17,000 in the tri-county area could face higher costs during open enrollment.  KOIN
  • The Oregon State Public Interest Research Group released its 40th Trouble in Toyland Report on Thursday which revealed that AI toy chatbots may direct children to unsafe behaviors and discuss explicit topics — the report advises parents to research these products before buying.  KOIN
  • New data from the Oregon Health Authority showed that poor air quality led to more emergency and urgent care visits for breathing problems and stress, with a 25% rise in asthma-related cases during the 2020 wildfires. The weekly refreshed data — collected from state health surveillance systems — help local health partners prepare for future air pollution events.  KOIN
