  • The Hillsboro Downtown Partnership and Unite Oregon host Lotería de Paisanos today at 996 S.E. Oak St from 4 to 8 p.m. The event invites community members to visit local Latino owned businesses to win gift cards while supporting downtown vendors.  Hillsboro News-Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Walters Cultural Arts Center will host its fifth annual Local Singer-Songwriter Night featuring local talent at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, with tickets available at $12 in advance or $17 on the day (Arts for All offers $5 tickets for qualifying individuals).  Hillsboro News-Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oregon ski resorts remain closed as heavy rains and warm storms melt snowpack below 30% of normal, with Mt Bachelor and Timberline recording a zero-inch base. Weather experts predict a parade of Pacific storms will help most hills open after Christmas.  KXL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Forest Grove Fire & Rescue celebrated a new $1M Pierce Quantum fire engine on Monday, Dec. 15 — Forest Grove Mayor Malynda Wenzl cut the ribbon to officially launch the engine into service for the city and surrounding areas. Jointly purchased with the Forest Grove Rural Fire Protection District, the apparatus is expected to serve western Washington County for the next two decades.  Hillsboro News-Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • Washington County was third in the state for whooping cough cases, with 188 recorded through Dec. 10—only one case behind Clackamas. The Oregon Health Authority urged residents to update their vaccines as the state set a record 1,475 cases amid a return to pre-pandemic habits.  Hillsboro News-Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Statewide girls basketball coaches' polls released Tuesday, Dec. 16, show Tualatin remains on top in 6A, St. Helens leads in 4A, and Banks ranks high in 3A (coaches are encouraged to vote, especially in 5A).  Hillsboro News-Times
  • Hillsboro Hops installed sustainable turf on Monday, Dec. 15 as the new stadium nears completion. The ballpark will host its first event on Saturday, Feb. 28 to raise funds for the (Hops Fund) supporting local youth and families.  Hillsboro News-Times
  • Lakeridge girls basketball beat Glencoe 64-50 at Glencoe High School on Tuesday, Dec. 16 to remain unbeaten at 4-0. The team pulled away in the second half after a tight midgame stretch, setting up their next contest at home.  Hillsboro News-Times
