Portland Public Schools, Oregon's largest district, faces a $65 million deficit next school year. Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong announced Monday that up to 450 full-time-equivalent positions could be eliminated. The district breaks that down as 223 at schools, 60 in support roles and 167 in the central office and administration.
That doesn't necessarily mean 450 layoffs. KATU reports the total can include vacancies and services counted as staff equivalents. Armstrong said the district starts with the central office.
“The Governor should consider accessing $500 million from the Ed Stability Fund to buy down the PERS rate for schools across the state.”
- PERS payments: about $40 million of the deficit
- Education Stability Fund: $1 billion, funded by lottery dollars
- Closure proposals: 11 or 14 schools
